John S. French was born July 13 (although the Beckwith History stated July 14), 1829, the son of Simon and Mary (Smock) French who were married August 12, 1838 in Mercer County, Kentucky.  The French trek began in New Jersey where John's grandfather was forced to aid the British during the Revolutionary War.  Simon was a chair maker, abolitionist and Republican and moved his family to Marion County, Indiana when John was but a babe and on to Montgomery County about 1844.  John was one of five children and spent four years at Wabash College.  He went to teaching afterward and pursued that profession for a few years until he began studying medicine under Dr. John W. Straughan. Several studying under that good doctor.  Just before the break out of the Civil War John French attended Rush Medical College in Chicago, returning to Montgomery County first to Waveland then for a short time in Alamo to practice.  He enlisted in the Civil War, Co B, 120th Indiana Volunteers and served as Assistant Surgeon to that unit.

After the Civil War, he carried on his practice again at Alamo where he was an extremely active member of the Odd Fellows and Grand Army of the Republic.  In February, 1880, he moved to Crawfordsville and established an active practice.

In 1860, a medical student by the name of WIlliam Logan lived with him, studying under the good doctor.  He is found alone 9Crawfordsville #29) and listed as age 50 born in Kentucky (his father was born in New Jersey and mother in Kentucky in the 1880 census).

In 1883, he attended the Medical College of Indiana.
